The climb from Partenen

The first nine kilometres average close to 8 % and are the real climb. The fourth kilometre is the steepest of the whole ascent, the others mostly sit between 6 and 9.5 %. There are hardly any breaks here, only two kilometres drop below 6 %, the first one among them. This is where most of the elevation gain is made.

After that the character changes. Two flatter kilometres are followed by one more short steeper section at around 7 %, then the road calms down for good. The last three kilometres mostly stay between 2 and 6 %. So the top of the Silvretta is more of a roll than a climb.

Practical tips

On the Silvretta the effort should go into the first nine kilometres, the rest is much easier. A compact gearing is enough for the 14 % peak. At 2,032 m it can be windy and cool up by the reservoir, so bring a jacket for the descent. Carry on east and you roll down into the Paznaun towards Ischgl, the way back to Partenen is the same road.
