The Passo Duran at a glance

The key figures from Agordo: category HC, 12.1 km, 994 m of climbing, 8.2 % on average and 15 % at its steepest. The road leaves Agordo and climbs to the pass at 1,601 m. On the far side it drops into the Val di Zoldo to Dont. In our list the Duran belongs to the Dolomites region.

The climb from Agordo

The first two kilometres are moderate at around 6 %. Then the gradient picks up: kilometres three to five sit at 8 to 10 %, followed by one slightly calmer kilometre at under 7 %. It is the last chance to breathe before the key section. Anyone who went too fast so far will notice it soon.

Roughly between kilometres six and ten comes the hardest block: four kilometres averaging over 10 %, two of them above 11 %. After that the road eases clearly, and the last two to three kilometres are much gentler. So the Duran ends calmer than its middle. The work is done before the top.

How it compares to our 100 climbs

At 8.2 % the Duran is one of the steepest climbs in the list, only 17 are steeper on average. In the Dolomites only the Passo di Fedaia and the Tre Cime di Lavaredo are steeper. At 1,601 m it has the lowest finishing point of all eight Dolomites climbs in our list. With 994 m of climbing and 12.1 km it is one of the smaller ones, 74 climbs have more elevation gain.

Practical tips

For the steep block in the upper half a compact gearing with a large sprocket makes sense. Start calmly and keep something back for the four hard kilometres. At 1,601 m the top is only moderately high, a windproof layer for the descent is usually enough. Heading on you drop into the Val di Zoldo to Dont, the way back to Agordo is the same road.
