Bucket-List Print: Monte Grappa

The Monte Grappa rises straight out of the plain near Bassano. From Romano d’Ezzelino it is 26.4 kilometres and 1,567 metres of climbing up to 1,745 metres. Because the start is so low, the summit is not high, but the elevation gain is large. Only 17 climbs in our list have more.

The climb from Romano d’Ezzelino

The first 13 kilometres or so average around 6.5 % and are anything but even. Steeper kilometres of 9 to 10 % alternate with calmer ones, and two kilometres sit at only just over 2 %. After that the road runs level for a few kilometres and even drops slightly in one place. This short break divides the climb into two halves.

The last ten kilometres again average around 6.5 %, but they are steadier than the first half. Most kilometres sit between 6 and 8.5 %, without big jumps. Only the last kilometre is a little gentler. Anyone who went steady in the first half can hold a good rhythm here.

How it compares to our 100 climbs

With 1,567 m of climbing the Grappa is one of the big climbs: only 17 have more, four in the Eastern Alps. At 26.4 km it is also long, only 15 climbs are longer. The finishing height of 1,745 m, on the other hand, is low for that much climbing, 70 climbs end higher. The Grimselpass is almost the same size with 26.3 km and 1,534 m of climbing, but ends at 2,165 m.

Practical tips

On the Grappa a compact gearing is enough for the 12 % peak, pacing matters more. The start in the plain can be warm, so bring enough to drink for a long climb. Use the flat section in the middle to eat. At 1,745 m it is still noticeably cooler than down in the plain, so bring a jacket for the descent back to Romano d’Ezzelino or on towards Caupo.
