The Monte Bondone climbs straight out of Trento up to a high plateau west of the city. It is 19.3 kilometres and 1,456 metres of climbing up to 1,650 metres. Because the start in the Adige valley is so low, the elevation gain is large for a modest finishing height. And the gradient is remarkably even from bottom to top.
The Monte Bondone at a glance
The key figures from Trento: category HC, 19.3 km, 1,456 m of climbing, 7.5 % on average and 12 % at its steepest. The road leaves Trento and climbs west of the city up to 1,650 m. On the far side it runs down towards Lasino. In our list the Bondone belongs to the Eastern Alps region.
The climb from Trento
The climb starts right away, and one of the first kilometres is clearly steeper than the rest. After that the Bondone settles into a very steady rhythm: kilometre after kilometre sits between just under 7 and 8 %. There are no flat pieces and no long walls. It is a climb for one steady pace over a long time.
Around the halfway point comes a single steeper kilometre close to 11 %, after which the rhythm returns. The second half is a little steeper than the first, with values mostly between 7 and just over 8.5 %. Only right at the top does the road flatten out. So the Bondone asks for patience rather than punch.
How it compares to our 100 climbs

At 1,650 m, on the other hand, it finishes fairly low, 73 climbs end higher. The Col de la Madeleine is similar with 19.5 km and 1,535 m of climbing at 7.9 %.
Practical tips
The Bondone needs no extreme gearing, a compact chainset is enough for the 12 % peak. More important is a pace you can hold for more than an hour at an even effort. The start in the Adige valley can be warm, so bring enough to drink. At 1,650 m it is cooler than in Trento, so a jacket for the descent back to the city or towards Lasino is a good idea.
