The climb from Cave del Predil

The start is already hard: the first two kilometres are among the steepest of the whole climb. After that it eases a little, and around kilometres four to six the gradient sits between 5 and 7 %. This is the only part where you can breathe a bit. Use it, because the harder half is still to come.

About five kilometres below the top the second steep block begins, and roughly two kilometres before the end comes the steepest kilometre of the climb. After it the gradient drops clearly, the last two kilometres are much gentler. So the Mangrt ends calmer than it begins. Anyone who has made it through the hard block can ride the rest at ease.

Practical tips

For the Mangrt a compact gearing with a large sprocket is advisable, as the steep kilometres come both at the start and near the top. Start calmly, the first two kilometres come without any warm up. At 2,055 m it is cool even in summer, so bring a jacket for the descent. Start and finish are in Cave del Predil, and on the way back you pass the Predil Pass once more.
